Costume & accessory party ideas

Dressing Up for a Murder Mystery Party (Totally Optional, Ridiculously Fun)

One of the most enjoyable parts of a murder mystery party — if you’re into it — is dressing up.

Costumes, accessories, accents, questionable moustaches… they all add flavour to the night. They help people relax, step out of their usual selves, and lean into the silliness of the mystery.

That said, let’s be very clear right from the start:  dressing up is optional. Always.

No pressure. No judgement. No “you’re doing it wrong”. This is about fun, not commitment.

Why Costumes Make It Even Better

When people dress up — even just a little — something changes.

  • People relax faster.
  • They lean into their character without overthinking it.
  • They start accusing friends of murder with a level of confidence that is wildly unjustified.

The costume itself doesn’t need to be clever or impressive. Its real job is to flip the mental switch from everyday life to play. Once that happens, the laughs come quicker, the banter gets louder, and the mystery goes completely off the rails (in the best possible way).

Easy Costume & Accessory Ideas

If you want ideas that require minimal effort, here are some low-commitment favourites:

  • 🕵️ Detective: coat, notebook, intense stare

  • 💎 Socialite: flashy jewellery, sunglasses, confidence

  • 🧥 Shady character: dark clothes, hat, hands permanently in pockets

  • 🎤 Performer: scarf, dramatic gestures, unnecessary flair

  • 🧑‍💼 “I made no effort but it still works”: suit jacket over anything

Honestly, half the fun comes from how wrong people get it — not how accurate they are.

Not Dressing Up? Absolutely Fine

Some people love costumes and some people hate them. Some people just want to turn up and enjoy the game. All of that is valid. You don’t ne

ed to dress up to be involved.

We design our murder mysteries so everyone can participate comfortably, whether you’re in full costume or regular clothes straight from work. No one gets singled out. No one misses out.

If dressing up makes you excited — do it. If it makes you anxious — skip it. If you’re unsure — bring one small thing and decide on the night. There is no “right” level of effort.

The goal isn’t to look good. The goal is to laugh, accuse your friends of murder, and have a night you’ll talk about later. Anything beyond that is a bonus.
